I had this problem w/ S&T 2007. Now I've got the same problem with S&T 2010.
The map fickers on and off when GPS tracking is enabled. If I disable GPS
tracking the map appears after a while. System is a Dell D600 laptop w/ 2GB
RAM, XP with latest patches and GlobalSat BU-353 Waterproof USB GPS Receiver.

S&T 2007 worked fine for about two years.

Does the problem occur within minutes after starting a trip with tracking
turned on, or after two to 10 hours? If it is after some hours of tracking,
try saving the map (keys alt, f, s) for file -> save. You must previously
have saved the map at least once so it knows the full save path. This has
been a problem with all S&T versions since tracking was introduced with S&T
2005, I think. I guess Microsoft hasn't figured out autosave yet or how to
manage memory; maybe it will figure it out when the company matures a
little.

I believe this was fixed in 2008.
In 2010, they made changed it again and now you can't delete the trails.
