I've heard about a version of S&T 2010 being offered for sale with the
product code embedded in the DVD. In other words, you don't need to enter a
product code; just install DVD and you're done. Is this some different kind
of version and/or is it legitimate?

The version downloadable from MSDN doesn't require activation code. Also, if
you have a volume license for S&T, then your software likely doesn't require
actiovation code.
